Personal Device Policy

WMS 2025-2026  Personal Device Policy

Dear Watertown Middle School Families,

I hope this letter finds you well! As we approach the opening of a new school year, I wanted to take a moment to address an important policy that helps us maintain a focused, productive learning environment for all our students.

Our Personal Device-Free Policy

In our ongoing effort to protect instructional time and minimize distractions, I would like to remind everyone that Watertown Middle School has a wireless communication device-free policy that is consistent with the new state law and district board policy. Here are the key points of our policy:

1. All devices must be put away from 7:15 am-2:30 pm: Students are required to keep their devices in their teacher’s classroom (wall) pocket or locker at all times while on campus during school hours.

2. This includes all communication devices: Smartwatches, earbuds, headphones, video games, and any other items that can be used to communicate, capture images, or record are included in this policy.

3. Emergency exceptions: In the event of an emergency, students will be allowed to use their devices to communicate. For non-emergencies, students can be granted permission to use their personal device to contact guardians by visiting the school office. They also have access to the visitor phone located in the main office. Don’t forget email is also permitted on the student’s school device and is a great way to communicate with your student without violating policy.

4. Accommodations for students with disabilities: We will comply with any needs stated as accommodations in IEP/504 plans.

5. Consequences: Non-compliance will be addressed according to the Wilson County Schools District Code of Conduct, which could include the guardian being required to pick up the student's device from the school office.

Why This Matters

  • By implementing this policy, we aim to:
  • Comply with state law and district board policy
  • Enhance focus during lessons
  • Promote face-to-face interactions
  •  Reduce distractions and potential conflicts
  •  Ensure a fair and consistent learning environment for all

We appreciate your support in helping us maintain this policy. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to our administrative team.
